When I first reviewed BS, I did it with the old TR website and compared several eras to the new blend by Germain. Min: $ 0. It is not a Latakia blast; however, the Latakia is more in the background keeping the groove solid as a drummer often does in jazz. This spectacular blend stands on top of the rostrum of the Hall of Fame, together with famous 759, and only few others. I have smoked it many times since, but it never became part of my standard repertory. I packed and lit it up. What I remember about Sobranie is the "dirt" taste, similar to a Guiness Stout. For a very broad reference I would say it is somewhere between Esotericas Penzance and G.L. The last time I smoked the real Balkan Sobranie Original mixture was in Italy 2004 (still produced but not much distributed then). I have tried this blend recently, I do agree with fellow reviewers that it is a brilliant blend, it is creamy and smooth, burns really cool with a nice hint of sweetness in the background. Maybe the preparation or selection of red & brown Virginias topped off with tasty Yenidje? Aging will do wonders to this I'm sure. Perhaps a Sobranie cocktail cigarette once every few months. I see people trying to sell 1 year old tins for upwards of $40 a piece just because of the scarcity of the blend. In that one, the smoky, woody, earthy Cyprian Latakia is the lead component, but lacks the depth and mustiness of earlier productions, and little less is here than before. A typical English blend, in the vein of Dunhill London Mixture and 965, but more rounded and less full in its taste. As another old codger, I am grateful for Leiconnsel's review below on this truly classic tobacco. This one is smooth and bold with good sourness from the orientals and slight smoke from the Latakia. Things were working together and it my taste buds were loving it. If all this good smoke is coming from the tobaccos alone, that's incrediblealmost magical!
